Background
Olerai
The identity of the organization is deeply rooted in the heritage of the indivisible Maa community. The name Olerai refers to a local, umbrella-like tree that carries profound cultural meaning and has a significant positive impact within the spheres of community life.
In our mission, the strength of a woman is directly likened to the Olerai tree, which spreads its leaves and roots throughout the world-famous Maasai Mara of Kenya—recently recognized among the Seven Wonders of the World (2025).
This tree is called baobab growing naturally in a well-conserved environment, serves as a powerful symbol of community resilience, a deep love for nature and animals, and the essential values of living together as one.
Manyatta
The Sanctuary of Community Life
The term Manyatta is a technical cultural word that defines the aboriginal (Maa) social and cultural life. It represents a way of life that deeply incorporates both human existence and nature conservation. Historically, the Manyatta is regarded as the “sanctuary” of community values, providing a space for leadership, spiritual revival, and serving as the epicenter of cultural belief and community survival.
Within the Manyatta, women play a crucial role and hold significant responsibilities in maintaining the fabric of society. This deep connection between the strength of women and the communal sanctuary is why the organization is named Olerai Manyatta, often referred to as “The Community Umbrella”.
This “umbrella” concept is visually represented in our logo, where the Olerai tree provides a protective canopy. Just as the Olerai tree spreads its leaves and roots across the world-famous Maasai Mara—a site recognized among the Seven Wonders of the World (2025)—our organization aims to spread its roots of empowerment and service throughout the indivisible Maa community and beyond. All groups have adopted; this Leadership curriculum is the pillar and cornerstone of Olerai Manyatta.
